whatever. just run. the only way to get better at running…… is to just run. people love to come up with easier ways to lose weight, but it doesnt work as well. just run.
I cannot agree enough with everything you said. One year ago I was in the best shape of my life. I could have done step-aerobics for 4 hours, but when it came to running I couldn’t get half a mile without my MP3 player. I HATE RUNNING! I get dancer’s high but when I finish running, I just feel like crap and thinking that I’ll never loose weight. Cardiovascular endurance is just as vital as muscle, but I strongly suggest aerobics. It doesn’t put as much strain on your joints or mid-section.
I run for an hour and 20 minutes at 11kph burrning 1200 calories. It certainly works.
Why the fuck are you talking so low
@niceguy999918 Agreed, yes you could run 5mile a day, overeat and gain weight. It is as simple as calories in vs calories out. As for your body “adjusts” to running therefor burns less calories? Rubbish. As you lose weight you will burn less calories, the formula is you burn 1 calorie for every kg of body weight you move 1kilometre.
Sick of people saying your body “adjusts” to cardio and it stops becoming effective re: calorie burn
Running is very good for weight loss. Bruce Lee did it to lose weight, and so did many great atheletes. By the way, after 20 minutes HIT on the treadmill, your metabolism is kept raised for hours.
I agree
I agree that running is not a magic bullet. Running at the right intensity, and length along with not eating less but eating smarter, and weight training will be your best bet to live a fit, and healthy life. I could run five miles a day everyday for a year and overeat fast food and junk food everyday, and gain weight. The reason is my body would adjust to 5 miles day like we all adjust. To do some major weight lose damage, you must continue to challenge your body, and eat smarter.
Congrats to you buddy – what you have done is really a fantastic achievement and very few people can get such dramatic results as those!
I appreciate your comments and your insight. Thanks for posting!
I will check it out. Thanks for the info. You have great points but I had to put in my two cents because I personally have benefited from running. I highly agree that lifting weights promotes fat loss because more muscle means more calories expenditure. Thanks Mate! I lost the weight because I wanted to be fit. Fitter not fatter! Running now has becomed a passion but I do agree its not for everybody. Thanks for posting useful this useful video.
However, most people aren’t as lucky as you and their body simply does not respond with a large amount of weight loss from running.
Also, if you cut out your resistance training, do you think you would have seen the same results? Is it possible that the majority of your results came from that training rather than the running?
Maybe not, but it’s worth considering.
Also, I highly disagree that low fat diets are the way to go for most people, but again it obviously worked for you!
Hey and thanks for the great comment!
If you want a great resource that sums up all the research on fat loss I highly recommend Alwyn Cosgrove’s Fat Loss University – The Science Of Fat Loss. In that he summarizes all the research that shows how long slow cardio does much less to raise your metabolism long term compared to metabolic resistance training.
That said, that is just a general rule and doesn’t apply to every situation. In your case, running clearly has worked well (great job, btw!)
I don’t know where you get your research stating that cardio does not keep your metabolism boosted after it is stopped while lifting weights, if done the right way, will keep the metabolism boosted for days at a time. I have personally lost 60 pounds in 4 months with just running, pull ups, push ups, and sit ups. A very strict diet on low fat, and high amounts of fruits and vegetables too. I do agree that you must be in shape to run. I started out walking, then jogging, sprinting, then running.
Thanks for the insightful comment!
I love using the walk/sprint interval training protocol, which is very effective for weight loss.
However, I prefer not to use running as modality to do it. With running, you are doing thousands of reps, which eventually is going to cause an injury. Why not do fewer reps of a more demanding exercise and get the same benefits?
If I can do just a few burpees or kettlebell swings and get the same effect without the injury risk, why should I use running?
I disagree. A great way to lose weight and burn fat is the walk/sprint method, if your clint is unable to run because of knee issue simply raises the incline would the answer.
Hi and thanks for the comment!
Great question. To help my clients simultaneously improve their aerobic capacity while also losing fat and gaining muscle, I use a system of training that I call metabolic resistance training.
Essentially what we do is use supersets, giant sets and circuit training so that we move quickly from exercise to exercise without resting much, if at all.
This way, my clients are actively exercising and keeping their heart rate up for the entire session.
Wow..no cardio necessary eh? How are your clients improving their heart and lung capacity, which is the scientifically proven best way to reduce chances of heart disease?
Well considering I train people at the gym all the time, I’m pretty familiar with elliptical machines.
Doing resistance training with weights does not make you gain or lose weight. It simply creates a change in your body. Whether that change is gaining or losing weight depends on the type of workout you’re doing and your nutrition program as well.
To say a blanket statement like ” cardio makes a person lean and resistance training makes them beefy” is misleading and untrue.
I doubt that you have seen any modern elliptical machine at the gym lately, most now include bars to work the upper body as well as the lower body, giving you a full body workout and helps you burn more calories. Also resistance training makes a person GAIN weight, not lose weight because muscle weighs more than fat. Cardio makes a person lean, resistance training makes a person beefy. Therein lies the difference here.
The problem I have with the elliptical machine is that it also does half of the work for you. You can go on that thing for hours and really not achieve much.
With my personal training clients, I never put them on traditional cardio machines. Instead, we do metabolic resistance training and just have a very intense workout.
And I get great results with everyone using this method, along with NO injuries.
From everything I’ve seen and read, I just don’t believe cardio is necessary.
Thanks for your input
Actually, if you are overweight, running on a treadmill is not a good option I do agree, however cardio is still the choice to burn off calories. Overweight people should be working out on an elliptical machine instead. The elliptical machine simulates running and takes the pressure off the joints and ligaments thereby reducing the chance of injury.
running is bad to start out tru a fast pace walk until u get your heart ready take it to a treadmill to run it isnt as bad on your back set the height to 15% turn speed up to 6 and run for 30 seconds jump off for 10 catch your breathe and go back on for 30 seconds also running is a good weight loss but study up on it first its to build leg muscles instead of weight loss, running takes years of running to lose the amount of weight u want to lose….
Hi!
You’re not alone in worrying that, but I can reassure you that as a female, working out with weights will NOT make you big and bulky!
Women have a totally different hormonal makeup and so you won’t be able to bulk up even if you try.
All of the magazine cover models and swimsuit models that you see in magazines work out with weights – it’s been proven to be the #1 way to build a sexy body, whether you’re a woman or a man.
Just give it a try and i promise you you won’t regret it!
